History

Lorwyn is the youngest of five with three older brothers and one sister. Her mother is elven and her father is human. As the youngest, she was indulged and pampered by her parents. She was practically raised as an only child as her siblings are all much older than her.

Her family lived in a cottage on a large acreage on the outskirts of a large city. Her mother, never completely comfortable with being surrounded by stone and brick, felt more at ease there. While her siblings went off and married and had their own children, Lorwyn preferred to play at swords with her father. She tended to scorn the womanly arts and only learned the things an adventurer would need.

She was frustrating to her mother, who had hoped that her youngest would follow her path as an animal trainer. While Lorwyn showed a love for animals, she didn’t have an interest in spending her days training hunters or ridding horses for spoiled nobles. She did, however, take the time to train her own mount, a mare by the name of Sighan.

Her mother did make another large contribution to her life, and that was training with the longbow, a weapon favored by Ehlonna, the elven goddess she worshiped.

One thing that Lorwyn liked almost as much as playing adventurer with her father was joining him on his weekly trips into town. It was on one such trip that she passed a group of teen aged boys training with swords at a school beside the local temple of Heironeous. When he noticed her interest, her father explained to her that the boys were acolytes of Heironeous training for some quest or another. He wasn’t really sure what.

Week after week, she went back and watched them train. Finally, their instructor, a tall man with arms the size of tree trunks, kindly asked her if she was lost. She told him no and kept watching. Annoyed, he told her to go back to her mother and work on her sewing skills. His students laughed at her embarrassment. Hotly, she informed him that she could do anything that his students could do, prompting more howls of laughter from the boys. By now, a crowd had formed. They watched with interest, urging him to let the girl try.

To save face, the sword master handed her a wooden practice sword and invited her to try her luck against one of his better students. The boy was taller than her and had a much larger build than her slight, girlish one. He sneered at her and taunted her, calling her names, not scoring a mark until he got around to her half-elven heritage. She saw red and smacked his shins with the edge of the blade. That goaded him into the fight. Using her slight build and smaller size, she managed to trick him into loosing. The crowd cheered. The temple had been getting arrogant about its students’ abilities of late.

Uncertain of what to make of this turn of events, Swordmaster Lerron Velkrest invited her to enroll in the school. Under his tutelage, she learned things her father wasn’t able to teach her. It was another two years before she earned the respect of the boys she trained with, befriending Tonred Thaijin, the boy she’d bested years before.

Her mother didn’t approve of her youngest daughter training with her father and even less of her training at the temple. She’d raised her daughter to revere the goddess Ehlonna as she did. Lorwyn told her mother that she still respected her beliefs, but Ehlonna didn’t have any domain over fighters so she had to turn elsewhere for that. Lorwyn received full support from her father, who understood the lure of adventure, as that was how he met her mother. This caused some conflict between her parents.

When she was 20, Lorwyn graduated from the school, her father gave her his prized long sword and a new dagger. His armor wouldn’t fit her, so after some deliberation, her parents bought her a suit of studded leather armor.

After graduation, she stayed at the school for some additional training to learn how to use a glaive to give her a fifth weapon to use just in case. It would give her more versatility. Lerron had told her that few adventurers bothered to learn to use that kind of weapon. In addition to the glaive, she learned additional survival and tracking skills,

She went off adventuring on her own shortly after her 23rd birthday with a few of her classmates. None of them had really been away from the city for any length of time, so it was all new to them.
